In 1932, Peruna became the live mascot for SMU. Since 1934, the Culwell family has provided the black Shetland pony mascot for the University, and they established the Peruna Endowment Fund for the care and feeding of the current Peruna, as well as former and future Perunas. Peruna IX was introduced to the SMU community in 2011 and has attended many football games and other campus events over the years. The Mustang family adores him, and your financial support will help continue the wonderful tradition of the current and future Perunas joining the University community in celebrating victories on and off the field. "Pony Up!" for Peruna! The first 50 gifts of $10 or more to the Peruna IX Endowment Fund will unlock a $25,000 challenge gift for the Peruna IX Endowment Fund, thanks to the generosity of Taylor Martin ’99 and Hallie Martin.
Since 2011, our beloved mascot, Peruna IX, took the reins of this equine legacy and has brought spirit and pride to the SMU community. Our feisty stallion loves making appearances on campus and on ESPN and has been clocked galloping across Ford Stadium at a record pace. Sources say his spitfire character and strong personality make him well-suited for his strenuous job. He runs free at a secret location when not representing the Mustangs.
Peruna’s care is of top priority, and we need donations from our fellow Mustangs for his lodging, upkeep, health and well-being. Additionally, Peruna’s trailer was stolen and needs to be replaced, increasing operational cost for next year. Our program is funded solely by generous donations and relies on your generosity to keep our beloved pony and his handlers operational.
