College enrollment among Hispanic or Latino students has skyrocketed in the last 50 years and continues to grow annually. Hispanic or Latino student college attendance has increased 884% since 1976. While 66% of White students finish their degree within five years, only 55% of Hispanic and Latino students finish within the same timeframe. Latino Alumni of SMU recognized that economics plays a key role in degree completion and established the newly-named Latino Alumni Scholarship in 2009. The Latino Alumni Scholarship has provided tuition assistance to students since 2009 and awarded over 50 scholarships totaling more than $280,000. The scholarship alleviates some of the financial burden and allows SMU students continued academic excellence.
