The Department of Anthropology wishes to celebrate the career of Dr. Caroline Brettell, who retired after 35 years of dedicated service to SMU.
Brettell served multiple times as department chair and also acted as dean ad interim of Dedman College. She was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2017. Her major research focus is the anthropological study of human migration and gender, and her work continues to inform scholars and policy makers across many disciplines.

To honor Brettell’s legacy as a scholar, program builder and leader, the department will establish the Caroline Brettell Lecture Series beginning in Fall 2025. The lecture series will bring scholars to SMU to discuss cutting-edge anthropological research, interact with our faculty and student body, and contribute to the life of the mind at SMU.
