Mustang Rocketry

Mustang Rocketry serves the greater Lyle and SMU community interested in hands-on experience in aerospace engineering. The purpose of Mustang Rocketry is to develop, design, build and test rockets for research and competition. Mustang Rocketry creates a space for peer mentorship of SMU students interested in high-power rocketry certifications and aerospace engineering projects.

Currently, our remaining budget for Level 1 and Level 2 high-power certifications allows for one more student to pursue the process, with seven students currently working on their certification or having already achieved it in fall 2024.

Your support during SMU Giving Day will directly impact our ability to fund additional students' certification builds and to attend the 2026 Intercollegiate Rocket Engineering Competition, the world's largest international rocketry competition and conference, in June 2026. The competition consists of building and launching a rocket with a payload size of 2.2 pounds to a target altitude of either 10,000 feet or 30,000 feet.

Our organization's goal of $10,000 on SMU Giving Day will allow us to complete our IREC rocket build, as well as fund our team's attendance at IREC and to continue the certification program for more students.
